An integrated and recovery-oriented model of care
This document explores the current evidence and landscape of care provision
for people with concurrent disorders, focusing on integrating mental health and
substance use services, as well as emphasizing a recovery-oriented approach
to treatment. It aims to provide insights into the challenges, best practices, and
strategies for both providers and organizations to improve the quality of care and
outcomes for this population.
Model of care summary
A one-page infographic describing the model of care and key domains.
We brought health care providers, researchers, and people with lived experience
together in a study that used the Delphi method. Incorporating the results of three
survey rounds, we have constructed a model for delivering integrated and recoveryoriented
care for people with complex concurrent mental health and substance
use challenges. The model of care is structured around a set of guiding principles,
core domains, and care indicators, and each domain includes (a) reflective practice
questions for providers and (b) organizational opportunities for change.
